Welcome to the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2010 – Trust Level Reports

The Cancer Patient Experience survey was funded and organised by the Department of Health and the methodology and survey content was overseen and approved by them. The survey programme is under the overall direction of Professor Sir Mike Richards CBE.

It is very important that anyone wishing to read a Trust Report also reads this brief statement first:

The National Report on the 2010 Cancer Patient Experience Survey sets the individual Trust reports in context. The Executive Summary to the National Report is a helpful start to understanding the data from the survey as a whole, and should be read by all those interested in the quality of cancer services.

NHS Trusts providing cancer services are of different sizes and deal with different numbers of cancer patients. This means that sample sizes, and the number of responses, will vary between Trusts.

In the 2010 survey, cancer patients were selected to receive a questionnaire if they had had treatment at a hospital between January and March 2010, had been treated as an in-patient or day case, and had a diagnosis of cancer in the primary diagnosis field. Arrangements were put in place to de-duplicate the patient lists so that no one received more than one questionnaire.

Each Trust sent us lists of its own patients who had been treated on its site or sites and these patients represent the sample for each Trust. Each patient’s tumour group was defined by the ICD10 code (International Classification of Diseases) applied to their hospital records.

These ICD10 codes were then grouped in to Cancer Groups (tumour groups) and this is the basis of the detailed reporting in both the National Report and Trust Reports on the survey.

Cancer patients are often treated at a number of different Trusts over multiple periods of treatment. It is also the case that some Trusts do not provide some services (e.g. radiotherapy) and there are complex pathways through which patients travel for treatment.

Both the questionnaire and the survey covering letter guided patients to comment on treatment received at the Trust and the site/s named in the covering letter. The Trust named on the letter was the one that had sent that patient’s data to us.

Each Trust Report is divided in to two sections: the first section combines all the Tumour Groups (i.e. different kinds of cancers) together. The second section looks at 13 different Tumour Groups separately.

Because Trusts are of different sizes, and because some cancers are rarer than others, Trust Reports may have no available information for some tumour groups.

We have implemented “small numbers rules” which mean that, where a Trust has less than 20 responses in a particular Tumour Group, the results from those responses are not shown. This is to prevent distortion of a Trust’s relative position against others or in comparison with other tumour groups in the same hospital.
